Only 200 core words on this Language Mate, with a spare column for user to customise. i customised the extra column on this one with a few more core words and words I thought would be useful to discuss the topic in question - everyone's right to speech, language and literacy, including learners with disabilities. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is very clear on this. We must facilitate communication (defined as language in Article 2),, freedom of expression and opinion, and equal education for EVERYBODY by accepting and facilitating the use of Braille, sign language and any and all means and modes of Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) of a person's choice. No more 'I don't know what to do' or 'We can't afford to do that'. We have to know that 250 to 400 core words = access to 80% to over 90% of daily speech and all language functions. Therapists who do no more than turn taking, behaviour management, simple wants and needs, yes/no answers and noun/adjective phrases like orange wall, blue door need to realise that a right to language must mean a right to the language words just like everyone else uses. And teachers need to realise that eliciting one word answers in response to closed questions, mostly nouns, is a denial of language growth to students who cannot speak and get no other opportunity to use words than nouns on class worksheets.
